Singularity theorems based on trapped submanifolds of arbitrary co-dimension
Standard singularity theorems are proven in Lorentzian manifolds of arbitrary dimension n if they contain closed trapped submanifolds of arbitrary codimension. By using the mean curvature vector to characterize trapped submanifolds, a unification of the several possibilities for the boundary conditions in the traditional theorems and their generalization to an arbitrary codimension is achieved....
متن کاملTrapped submanifolds in Lorentzian geometry
In Lorentzian geometry, the concept of trapped submanifold is introduced by means of the mean curvature vector properties. Trapped submanifolds are generalizations of the standard maximal hypersurfaces and minimal surfaces, of geodesics, and also of the trapped surfaces introduced by Penrose. Selected applications to gravitational theories are mentioned.
متن کاملVanishing theorems for associative submanifolds
Let M7 a manifold with holonomy in G2, and Y 3 an associative submanifold with boundary in a coassociative submanifold. In [5], the authors proved that MX,Y , the moduli space of its associative deformations with boundary in the fixed X, has finite virtual dimension. Using Bochner’s technique, we give a vanishing theorem that forces MX,Y to be locally smooth. MSC 2000: 53C38 (35J55, 53C21, 58J32).
متن کاملGlobal Pinching Theorems of Submanifolds in Spheres
Let M be a compact embedded submanifold with parallel mean curvature vector and positive Ricci curvature in the unit sphere Sn+p (n≥ 2, p ≥ 1). By using the Sobolev inequalities of P. Li (1980) to Lp estimate for the square length σ of the second fundamental form and the norm of a tensor φ, related to the second fundamental form, we set up some rigidity theorems. Denote by ‖σ‖p the Lp norm of σ...
متن کاملDensity profile of a harmonically trapped ideal fermi gas in arbitrary dimension.
Closed-form analytic expressions are derived for the density profile of a harmonically trapped noninteracting Fermi gas in d dimensions. Shell structure effects are included to leading order in 1/N, where N is the number of particles. These corrections to the local density approximation scale as deltan/n approximately N-alpha, where alpha=(1+1/d)/2.
